Clinical Info:

Calcium is involved in the regulation of neuromuscular and enzyme activity, bone metabolism and blood coagulation. Calcium blood levels are controlled by a complex interaction of parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, calcitonin and adrenal cortical steroids (corticosteroid).
The test can help in the monitoring and diagnosis of a patient that has symptoms of parathyroid or other thyroid disorders, malabsorption or for work-up for coma, pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal problems or for nephrolithiasis, polydipsia, polyuria, azotemia and multiple endocrine adenomatosis.

Additional Information:

When used for diagnosing a patient with hypercalcemia serum calcium levels should be measured on three separate occasions.
Serum calcium levels may be elevated in a multitude of scenarios including: Carcinoma (with or without bone metastases) in the lung, head or neck and other primary tumors such as kidney, liver, bladder, myeloma, leukemia and lymphoma among others. Certain drugs may also cause an increase or decrease of serum calcium levels.Low levels of serum calcium may be seen in patients that have vitamin D deficiency, renal issues, malabsorption and malnutrition among other reasons.
